Hand Tracker For Mobile Phones

One morning in 1997, Lyndsay Williams woke up with an idea for a new kind of mobile phone, controlled not by keys but sensors.  The resulting patent, defining technologies subsequently used in the iPhone, sold to Apple in 2008.  Now Girton Labs is working on a new technology that might just be as revolutionary.

SenseBooks

SenseBooks are a new type of  interactive printed book that use sensors to understand the reader's activity.  These sensors are similar to those used on the Apple iPhone, for instance light, motion, sound and touch.

Using wireless networking, a SenseBook will be able to indicate to your computer what page it is on, and have it load web pages that relate to the content.

Any kind of book could be a SenseBook, be it a cookery book, children’s educational book, or novel.  Picking up a cookery book, for example, could bring up the recipe of the day; a child's book could have your computer play sounds, videos and images to accompany the story.

Very low cost magnetic  motion sensors allow movement to be detected and musical "rock and roll" features added to books.  These novel motion sensors are a replacement for accelerometers, but cost much less.  We plan to use printed electronics on paper for part of the SenseBook, and the sensing system should add no more than about 20% to cost of printed book.

SenseBulb

SenseBulb is a very low power lightbulb, with a difference - it can read sensors and recognise gestures, and even SMS your phone to tell you when something's wrong!

Apart from domestic and business uses, it can also help Altzheimer's and dementia patients.
